Pet Party Line is a column written by Beth Byrd and is featured weekly in The Citizen News, one of our local newspapers. "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie!Q: When my dog is asleep, his eyes twitch, his paws start moving and his whole body shakes and shutters. Should I wake him when this happens? A: Don’t be alarmed, your dog is dreaming, so let him sleep! If you look at his/her eyes closely, you will see them moving and twitching under the eyelids. Humans do this, and we definitely have dreams. Researchers are almost positive that dogs have dreams too. Unfortunately, we can only guess what their dreams are about - maybe that “pretty little poodle who moved in around the corner” or chasing that squirrel - who knows! Q: Is it true that dogs age seven years for every human year? A: Contrary to popular belief, there’s no exact formula to gauge how much a dog ages. A rough guide is as follows: The first year of a dog’s life is equivalent to 15 human years. After two years, a dog is the equivalent of a 24-year-old. At three years - a 28 year old. Each year after that, add 4 human years to determine your dog’s approximate human age. For a more accurate count based on breed, health, behavior and other specifics, you can go to www.dogage.com.
