"The Dalmatian as a Fire House Dog/Westminster Dog Show"

Q: How did the Dalmatian become the mascot of firefighters?

A: Here are some of the theories showing the admirable qualities of Dalmatians that have endeared them to firefighters and secured them a permanent place in firehouse history.

In earlier times, Dalmatians were used to chase rats from horse stables and fire stations in London. They also guided the horse-pulled fire wagons through city streets. Dalmatians were trained to escort the fire engine to protect the horses from stray dogs and other animals. The distinctive black spots of this breed made it easy for the horses to distinguish from other dogs. It is also said that Dalmatians had a calming effect on horses and they escorted the horse-drawn fire wagons in order to quiet the horses. Once on the scene, the dog’s additional responsibility was to guard the fire equipment from vandalism and theft.

Q: What is a fun way to learn about cats and dogs?

A: This week the “Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show” will air on cable. It is second only to the Kentucky Derby as a continual sports longevity event (130 years) and will feature more than 2600 dogs. Just from watching these beautiful animals, you can learn about the history, special traits and interesting trivia associated with each distinctive breed. The many cat and dog shows airing on Animal Planet are wonderful forums to learn and enjoy and will help determine which pet might be best suited for you!
